Bitcoin Security MasteryTM — The Security Checklist

10 Non-Negotiable Steps for Every Bitcoin Holder

1
Move Your Bitcoin Off Exchanges

Exchanges are custodians — they hold your keys, not you. Any exchange can freeze withdrawals, be hacked, or go insolvent. Self-custody is the only way to truly own your Bitcoin.

2
Use a Hardware Wallet for Any Significant Amount

A hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline and unreachable by hackers. For any amount over $500, one is non-negotiable. Always choose a Bitcoin-only device. Every altcoin, smart contract, and extra feature a wallet supports is additional code that can contain vulnerabilities — security professionals call this the attack surface. A Bitcoin-only device does one thing, with the smallest possible attack surface. Recommended: Coldcard Q, Coldcard Mk4, Foundation Passport, or Blockstream Jade. Always buy directly from the manufacturer’s website — never from Amazon or third-party sellers. Pre-tampered devices have been used to steal funds.

3
Write Down Your Seed Phrase — On Paper, In Pen, Right Now

Your 12 or 24-word seed phrase is the master key to your Bitcoin. If you haven't written it down on physical paper (not digitally), your Bitcoin has no recovery path if something goes wrong with your device.

4
Verify Your Seed Phrase Backup Works

Writing it down isn't enough — you need to test that your backup actually recovers your wallet. Do a practice recovery with a small test amount before trusting your full stack to any backup.

5
Store Your Seed Phrase Backup in a Fireproof, Waterproof Location

Paper burns and floods. A metal seed phrase backup plate stored in a fireproof safe is the minimum standard for protecting your recovery phrase. Never store it digitally, in the cloud, or in a photo.

6
Use a Strong, Unique PIN on Your Hardware Wallet

Prevents physical access to your device. A weak PIN is an open door for anyone who gets their hands on your hardware wallet.

7
Consider Adding a Passphrase (25th Word)

A passphrase adds a second layer of security to your seed phrase. Even if your seed is compromised, a passphrase prevents access.
